DAC LEGAL INSIGHT – 18 JUNE 2026
WHY THE RULE OF LAW MATTERS IN EVERYDAY LIFE
When people hear the phrase “the rule of law,” they often think of courtrooms, judges and lawyers.
In reality, the rule of law affects every aspect of our daily lives.
Whether we are purchasing property, operating a business, signing a contract, attending school, driving on the roads or interacting with public institutions, we rely on the rule of law more than we may realise.
At its core, the rule of law means that everyone is subject to the law and entitled to its protection. No individual, organisation or government official is above the law, and decisions should be made according to established legal principles rather than personal preference or arbitrary power.
This principle may sound simple, but it is one of the most important foundations of a stable and prosperous society.
Imagine a society where contracts could be ignored without consequence.
Imagine a society where property could be taken without legal process.
Imagine a society where disputes were resolved according to influence, wealth or personal connections rather than established legal principles.
Economic growth would suffer.
Public confidence would decline.
Investment would become risky.
Communities would become less stable.
The rule of law helps prevent these outcomes by creating predictability and accountability.
For businesses, it provides confidence that agreements will be enforced and that commercial disputes can be resolved fairly.
For individuals, it provides protection against unlawful conduct and ensures access to justice when rights are infringed.
For governments, it promotes transparency and accountability in the exercise of public power.
The rule of law also plays an important role in maintaining public trust.
People are more likely to respect institutions when they believe decisions are made fairly and consistently.
This is why procedures matter.
Even where a decision appears reasonable, confidence in that decision may be undermined if the process leading to it was unfair, opaque or inconsistent.
The rule of law is therefore not merely about outcomes; it is also about the integrity of the process.
Throughout history, societies that have respected the rule of law have generally enjoyed greater stability, stronger institutions and more sustainable economic development.
Conversely, where the rule of law is weakened, uncertainty and instability often follow.
As citizens, professionals and businesspeople, we all have a role to play in supporting the rule of law. This includes respecting legal obligations, honouring agreements, acting with integrity and promoting fairness in our dealings with others.
The rule of law is not an abstract legal concept reserved for textbooks and courtrooms.
It is a practical principle that helps make everyday life safer, fairer and more predictable for everyone.
Its value is often most appreciated when it is absent.
For that reason, it remains one of the most important pillars of any democratic and prosperous society.
