DAC LEGAL INSIGHT – 18 JUNE 2026

Today, 18 June 2026, marks the International Day for Countering Hate Speech.

The observance provides an opportunity to reflect on the power of words and the responsibilities that accompany the right to freedom of expression.

Freedom of expression is one of the most important freedoms in any democratic society. It allows individuals to express opinions, share ideas, participate in public debate and hold institutions accountable. Without freedom of expression, many of the rights and freedoms we enjoy today would not exist.

However, freedom of expression also carries responsibilities.

In an age where information can be shared instantly through social media, a single statement can reach thousands of people within minutes. While technology has expanded opportunities for communication, it has also increased the potential for misunderstanding, misinformation and harm.

The law has long recognised that freedom of expression is not an unlimited right.

Legal systems around the world seek to balance free speech with the protection of reputation, public order and individual dignity. This balance is particularly important in a digital environment where comments made online may remain accessible for many years and may have serious personal, professional or commercial consequences.

Responsible communication requires more than simply exercising the right to speak. It requires accuracy, fairness, respect and an appreciation of the impact that words can have on others.

Whether in business, public life, professional practice or personal relationships, thoughtful communication contributes to trust, cooperation and social stability.

As legal practitioners, we often see disputes that arise not because parties intended to cause harm, but because words were used carelessly or without sufficient consideration of their consequences.

The ability to communicate effectively and responsibly remains one of the most valuable skills in modern society.

As we observe this day, we are reminded that while freedom of expression is a right worth protecting, responsible communication is a responsibility worth embracing.

Words have power.

They can inform, persuade and inspire.

They can also divide, damage and mislead.

The choice of how we use them ultimately rests with each of us.
