Every year on 20 May, the world commemorates World Metrology Day, recognising the importance of measurements, standards and accuracy in commerce, science, health and industry.
Although metrology is scientific in nature, it also has important legal implications. Fair trade and consumer confidence depend heavily on accuracy, transparency and accountability in the supply of goods and services.
The law therefore plays an important role in ensuring that:
- goods are sold according to correct weights and measurements;
- consumers receive the quality and quantity they pay for;
- products and services meet required standards; and
- businesses operate fairly and transparently within the marketplace.
